WELCOME TO DEPARTMENT OF MISSOURI

No One Does More For Veterans
As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group.  Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in the Persian Gulf, Korea, Kosovo, the war on terrorism or peace-keeping expeditionary campaigns. Your courage and sacrifice have made a difference in preserving and defending world peace.

Commander's Corner

Commander Quincy Myrick

It has been busy and wonderful all at the same time.  Missouri leadership has been attending District SOIs and meetings. The feedback has been very good, keep up the good work. President Patti Burge, Chairperson Andre' KillKelley, and I attended the National Home 100th Anniversary Bash. It was a wonderful event and great to see so many people there to celebrate. In July I helped out at the Jefferson County Fair VFW booth, four Posts joined together to make it a great success. If you have the opportunity to do an event like this, I highly encourage it. The huge highlight recently was the National Convention in Columbus OH. Columbus is the birthplace of the VFW and we were honored to be there. Missouri had a good delegation and took care of business. There were long days and was quite a bit of discussion on a few by-laws and propositions. Members do have a say and are heard - democracy in progress. Two historical events took place. Our new Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief, Corey Geisler was nominated from the floor and won. We also elected the first woman Commander-in-Chief, Carol Whitmore. If you haven't heard her acceptance speech, I suggest you listen to it. Commander Whitmore is a Veteran first and represents all Veterans. Highlights from the convention are available on www.vfw.org  (Media&events/126th VFW National Convention) The election is in 1 of 9 (you can see your delegate votes being cast at 1:42:47) The Patriotic Parade is in 2 of 9 and the vote for by-law amendment is in 3 of 9 and your delegate votes are cast at 1:27:05. I look forward to seeing what this year will bring.

Department VSO Information

A Veteran Service Officer (VSO) helps veterans, and their families navigate the complex process of applying for benefits and services from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). They assist with filing claims for disability compensation, pensions, healthcare, education benefits, and other services. VSOs also help veterans gather necessary documentation, ensure claims are properly submitted, and guide them through appeals if their claims are denied. VSO's act as advocates, making sure veterans get the benefits they are entitled to.

Editorial from the Webmasters

The Department of Missouri Website is a living document dedicated to Missouri Veterans.  The site is for the dissemination of news, information and ideas to the membership.  With that said, we are asking members to share their activities and stories with us to pass along.  We are wanting committee chairpersons to share what they are doing on a more regular basis.  Receiving updates quarterly at the COA convention is fine, but it does not reflect current activities.  We would like to publish a Newsletter at least Monthly to keep the membership in tune with the latest happenings.  In addition, we know that several members were taking pictures at the COA.  We would love to have you share them with us to post on the Department Gallery.  All you need to do is email them to us with a description and we will do the rest.
Become an active participant in the Department Website.  This is your chance to participate.
